Design Tips for Creating Outdoor Signs That Attract Customers

For businesses of any size, it is important to create an attractive, eye-catching outdoor sign for your storefront property. By doing so, you will be able to have more opportunities to generate sales and revenue for your business, as more people are drawn to your business based on the enticing outdoor signage. In order to create the ideal outdoor sign for your business, you should take a look at some of the following tips that the signage experts at Behrends Group have put together. No matter what type of outdoor sign you require, we can make it happen, so let’s get started!

Bigger is Often Better

When it comes to signs, no matter where it happens to be placed, you want to be sure that the words are clearly visible from a reasonable distance. Not everyone is lucky enough to have 20/20 vision, so you should make sure the font size of your sign is large enough to read for everyone. In our experience, it is best to stick to the general guideline of one additional inch of letter height for every ten feet of distance from the sign. So for a sign that can be seen from 100 feet away, you should make the letters at least 10 inches high.

Font Legibility

Creativity is always encouraged when creating a sign for your business. It is important to show off your own unique style and identity in your sign, but never at the expense of legibility. Fonts that are overly ornate or highly detailed such as cursive fonts can be hard for passers-by to make out, even from up close. An ideal font doesn’t have to be huge block letters, but it should be clear to see from all vantage points, even at a glance. In order to ensure this happens, make sure you pay attention to details like the letter spacing so the words on your outdoor sign don’t appear too bunched together.

Use Contrast to Your Advantage

When you select the colour of your outdoor sign, the best choices are the colours that will naturally contrast with the surrounding environment. Colours like bright red or yellow are often best, because they easily contrast in a way that makes them stand out, even at a fair distance. Whatever colour you choose, make sure that it also makes sense with your business brand. There are colours for outdoor signs other than red and yellow that contrast well, so don’t constrain yourself based on visibility alone.

Feature a Logo or Image

You can doubly enhance the creativity and attractiveness of your outdoor sign by adding a logo or image beside the text. This will not only help you stand out in a big way, but it can also actively draw people to your store based on the creativity of your logo or the flashiness of the image you select. If the sign drives traffic towards your business, it has certainly done its job.

Signage Trends to Watch Out For in 2019

Like most modern industries, there are new trends to be on the lookout for in the world of signage this year. For most of us, signs are something we encounter every day, usually without thinking about them. They serve a very straightforward purpose, but as new technologies are developed, and new innovations are introduced, the old signs we are familiar with may start to change over the next year or so. To stay ahead of these new directions in signage, we’ve put together a short list of some emerging trends to be on the lookout for in 2019. From new digital signs to classically inspired bronze metal signage, there is something new for everyone this year.

Less is More

In the past, you may have seen a lot of multi-coloured signs all over places like retail stores and other commercial properties in an attempt to elicit a feeling of excitement about certain sales or promotions. Starting this year however, you may encounter more of a minimalist approach to promotional signage. We aren’t saying that big, bright sale signs are going to completely be a thing of the past, but there will likely be a decline in the quantities of this type of sign. Subtlety and cleverness will likely take the front seat in terms of signage strategies starting in 2019.

More Digital Signage

Screens are everywhere these days, which is why the trend towards digital signage makes perfect sense for 2019. Not only will digital signs give people more options to alter and expand on original sign strategies, interactive digital signage is also becoming more and more common. Giving consumers the ability to actively gather information that is of personal interest is a trend we expect to see more of in retail stores, theatres, and even public spaces such as parks o transit centres.

Quality Over Quantity

In accordance with the ‘less is more’ approach discussed above, you may find that people are taking a more refined approach to signage and decals. Rather than saturating an area with signs, brands are looking to make more distinctive and noticeable signage apparent to people, rather than overwhelming them with content. Directional decals and instructional signage with practical uses are more common than lots of colours and big, wordy signs. You may also find smaller, more distinguished signage made from quality materials that get noticed such as finished wood or polished bronze.

Trends like the ones we are witnessing in signage this year seem to be moving to a more consumer oriented strategy. To keep up with the latest trends in quality signage strategies, be sure to visit Behrends Group’s website, or contact us directly today.

A Perfect Blend of Artisanal Work and Technology

A long legacy of experience in artisanal work and techniques is only as good as it is adaptable. These days, being adaptable means incorporating technology in ways that streamline processes and increase quality and efficiency without affecting the craftsmanship of the final product.

Behrends Group has a combined experience of at least 205 years in our foundry alone and these experts use the human touch and eye to execute every project to the highest standard of perfection. Having long-standing employees – many of whom have devoted their entire career to working with Behrends Group – means that the creative possibilities are endless. By having a strong foundation of knowledge and experience, such a team is better able to push the limits of what can be done with the designs and the materials at hand.

At the same time as this experience is central to the quality of products we offer, being at the forefront of technological innovation has always factored heavily into our work as well. Our design team is proficient at using the best technology to craft designs (whether two-dimensional drawings or three-dimensional renderings) that will exceed your expectations. Our fabrication team uses all kinds of advanced machinery as well as 3D printing and other innovative techniques. Finally, our installation –team uses the best tools of the trade and know-how about environmental factors and material quality to ensure that what we have spent time designing and developing also looks its absolute best.

This perfect balance of knowledge-keeping and experience while being open to new innovations sets Behrends apart. It is easy for other companies to replicate where we are at with technology, but without the advanced repertoire we have accumulated over the years, testing and crafting every type of project imaginable, there are still limits on the possibility of both signage design and execution. We have said it before and we will say it again: Every sign is a learning situation and, at Behrends, we love to be pioneers in the industry, pushing the boundaries of what is possible while delivering high-quality, custom signage every time.

Discover Behrends Group’s Exceptional Signage History in the Hotel Industry

As we gear up to attend the Hospitality Design Exposition and Conference (HD Expo) from May 2 to 4 in Las Vegas, we thought we’d reflect on and share some of our work and experiences in the hotel industry. We have a long history in the industry, one that stretches back over 65 years!

Back when Behrends Group was known as Behrends Bronze, we were the key supplier of cast bronze, brass, and aluminum signage in Canada. Our high-end castings were a natural fit for the country’s prestigious hotels that wanted to stand out from the rest. We produced signage for the Hilton Toronto in the downtown area and a series of Holiday Inns located on the East Coast. For the latter project, the hotels had a nautical theme, so the brass signs with unique rivets really fit the character of the design.

One of our recent projects that stands out is the signage at The Armory. The client came to us with no preconceived idea for what they wanted their suite plates to look like, so our team had almost free reign to use whatever materials, shapes, and methods they wanted. The suite plates we created blend frosted acrylic, brushed and milled aluminum, and a tactile number plate with braille (you can view the design below). The process involved a few minor edits during the design stage, which were mostly done to reel in the cost. Similar signage projects that involve 3D modelling help as add value by allowing our design team to work very closely with our clients.

With the combined resources of our foundry, machine shop, router tables, flatbed printers, and now our 3D model printers, our sales staff and design team have access to all the tools that can allow them to creatively showcase any hotel’s brand and personality. Visit us at our booth (Booth #1207) at the HD Expo to chat with our team about our long and successful history in the hotel industry, and to discover how our modern tools and processes can help create quality signage for your hotel project.
